Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the right to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
