Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters face the kind of problems that come with any relationship after ten years. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
