The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
