Minister States Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Cars.

An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified information in all cars.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This wider security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official activities, including transport usage to communication habits.
